Historic Center
Our beautiful city of Aguascalientes commemorates its anniversary every October 22nd. In 2015, Aguascalientes celebrated 440 years since its founding, and as expected, the heart of this celebration, called the City Festival, is the historic center.
The foundations of the Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the Fort of Aguascalientes took root in 1575, giving life to this beautiful city, which now has a population of over a million people.
The Historic Center of Aguascalientes, the heart of the state, houses our greatest heritage in terms of estates, gardens, museums, shops, restaurants, etc. A legacy that we have proudly inherited from our ancestors.
Walking through the large and small streets of the center is like immersing yourself in history. Our beautiful buildings are part of an invaluable collection of Heritage Estates protected by the Institute of Anthropology and History. Each one of them is a testament to the good people who put their effort and determination into making Aguascalientes the prosperous state that fills us with pride.
To see the future, one must review the past. In that position, Aguascalientes is a city whose history transcends the testimonies of women and men who, for generations, for more than four hundred years, have forged with their example people of noble character and courageous deeds.
Events marked in gold letters in the history of Mexico have taken place in this important place. Its privileged location in the center of the nation made it part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a route forged by Spanish settlers that connected the southern United States with present-day Mexico City for more than 400 years and spanned 2,600 km.
Today, that long history is recognized by the UNESCO designation of Aguascalientes' historic center as a World Heritage Site in 2010. We are therefore committed to preserving Aguascalientes's grandeur for present and future generations.
