Welcome to a historic theater: the Teatro Morelos. This theater was inaugurated on August 25, 1885 with the production "La muerte civil" by the Italian actor and producer Leopoldo Burón. Its appearance is reminiscent of European theaters, lined entirely in beige quarry stone and with a beautiful classical interior. The theater preserves a horseshoe-shaped hall, a monumental chandelier that marks the exact acoustic center of the venue.
Designed by Ing. José Noriega, construction began in 1883 and was completed two years later. The architectural style is neoclassical, and the stage is Italianate, divided into two parts:
1. The horseshoe-shaped space dedicated to the audience.
2. The stage box that borders the audience space through the entrance.
The Teatro Morelos was the site of historical events of great importance in the context of the Mexican Revolution. From the formation of the Revolutionary Convention, during which the different armed forces met to establish a dialogue that would determine the future of the revolution, to the adoption of the Plan of Ayala proposed by the Zapatista delegates and the appointment of General Eulalio Gutiérrez as Provisional President of the Republic, whose term ran from November 6, 1914, to January 16 of the following year.
On March 30, 1993, the Morelos Theater was declared a National Historic Monument by presidential decree. On the upper floor, you'll find a small on-site museum to learn more about the Sovereign Revolutionary Convention.
