The current constitutional headquarters of the H. City Council of Aguascalientes, known as the Municipal Palace, is a building with more than 300 years of history, located in the center of the city. This property was ceded on September 30, 1701 by Captain José Rincón Gallardo to the mayor Diego de Parga y Gayoso, so that it could be used by the municipal administration for the construction of “Las casas reales” and the construction of the town jail in the back.
Its main entrance is the north door, which is located in front of the Exedra on the walkway of the Plaza da le Patria. Stop to admire its portico and central façade. On the upper floor, you will see the thicker pilasters, where a truncated triangular pediment rests on which you can see the republican eagle "crowned" by a Phrygian cap, a symbol of equality, liberty and fraternity, ideals born in the enlightened revolutions of the 17th and 18th centuries. Below this you can read "Palacio Municipal" written on the quarry.
Its first courtyard has remained virtually unchanged for at least 200 years. The second was created during the remodeling led by Engineer Carlos Macías Arellano, in what was the city's former men's prison. The work was completed by Mr. Francisco Ramírez Martínez during his administration from 1978 to 1980.
During this renovation, the second courtyard was built on two levels and the central double-ramp staircase that divides both courtyards. In 1998, a mural was commissioned on the front ramp from master painter Guillermo Cuellar Arellano to commemorate the 423rd anniversary of the founding of Aguascalientes. The mural is titled "Mexico Has One Heart: Aguascalientes", and depicts people, buildings, and other elements that speak to the historical, cultural, and human richness of the capital municipality.
